Meet Kevin

TorontoStarProfile_KevinVuong.jpg

As the Canadian-born son of refugees from the Vietnam War, Kevin knows what it’s like to roll up his sleeves and get things done. He lives by values of hard work and perseverance and is dedicated to celebrating the diversity of Toronto.

A former banker and University of Toronto law school graduate, Kevin is currently a Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine’s Translational Research Program at his alma mater, and serves as an Officer in Her Majesty's Royal Canadian Navy.

Kevin has held many leadership positions within our community including:

  • President of the Board for the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto;

  • President of his Condominium Board;

  • Chair of the Southcore Residents Association; and

  • Board Director for Friends of Fort York & Garrison Commons.

His leadership efforts have not gone unnoticed. For Kevin's service and impact, he has been named one of Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 and Her Majesty the Queen’s Young Leader for Canada.

Building on his years of professional leadership, Kevin has worked with developers and the City of Toronto to provide services for vertical communities such as building wider, accessible sidewalks and minimizing noise during construction. Kevin advocates for improved transit and is building bridges within the community by founding and leading the King Street Eats initiative.

Kevin’s focus is building a community that is safe and liveable; where residents are engaged, local businesses are supported, and disadvantaged communities are provided with opportunities to thrive.

Let’s work together to make great things happen!

In August, Toronto experienced 3 separate days of extreme weather resulting in flooding, the worst we've seen since 2013. While many were affected, the largest impact has been in the downtown core, specifically buildings. Many experienced flooding, with damage to roofs, pipes, parking facilities and vehicles. Currently, the City of Toronto has programs in place to assist but all of these are focused on single family dwellings, townhomes and buildings older than 1985.

This leaves the vast majority of downtown core residents unprotected - this is unacceptable.
I’m calling for action and for change to protect our buildings.

Please add your name if you believe that we must act now to protect our communities!

Issues

Safe Streets and Cycling

Kevin knows that cycling and walking are the most environmentally friendly and healthy transit options. Kevin will work to significantly improve the current and dangerous cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in the community. This includes, but is certainly not limited to, the Spadina and Bathurst bridges as well as the Spadina ‘pedestrian trap’ under the Gardiner Expressway. Kevin will also work with developers, city staff, and residents to ensure that all new developments are cycling-friendly, safe, accessible and follow Vision Zero guidelines.

Transit and TTC

Kevin understands that the TTC is essential to connecting ward communities. Kevin is committed to working with all levels of government and city staff to speed up the construction of the downtown relief line, which is needed urgently to reduce dangerous overcrowding on the TTC. Kevin also supports transit innovations such as the King Street Pilot, for which he has played a leading role via the King Street Eats initiative to promote rapid transit and local business. Kevin will also work with communities and fellow councillors to ensure Toronto’s beautiful Waterfront is well-served with improved and accessible transit options.

Property Taxes

Kevin knows you work hard for your money and wants your tax dollars spent responsibly. Kevin will be a strong champion at City Hall for the responsible and effective use of tax dollars. Kevin believes that the best investments of tax dollars are made with input from the citizens who receive city services – you!

Additionally, Kevin will work with the city and province to explore how to improve the current property tax system to ensure predictability and fairness.
